Description

The workshop Archival Landscapes of AI: Challenging Extractive AI Practices with Moving Image Art Installations, held on 4 December 2025 at the Eye Collection Centre (Amsterdam), explored how AI can be used to reconfigure audiovisual archives in more sustainable and critical ways.

Framed as a user requirements session, the workshop brought together researchers, artists, and heritage professionals to reflect on the tension between AI-driven access to archives and its environmental impact. Through a series of talks and collaborative exercises, participants examined how archival data enrichments—particularly around themes of extraction, ecology, and industry—can support new forms of access, creative reuse, and public engagement.

The core of the workshop consisted of participatory sessions in which attendees mapped conceptual categories, linked them to visual representations, and developed narrative assemblages using archival imagery. These activities aimed to surface how users interpret and remix environmental themes, while testing how moving image installations can foster reflection on sustainability, historical responsibility, and the role of archives within extractive systems.
