Data sprint 2026: Critical AI studies

Activity: Educational contribution / Supervising student theses, products Educational contribution Educational

Description

As part of the three-day data sprint (14–16 January 2026), in the context of the course Digital Methods and Information Analytics at the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, I contributed to the design and development of a methodological worksheet guiding students in conducting research with generative AI. The worksheet provides a structured framework for Critical AI and Digital Methods research, covering model selection, prompt design, data collection, and analysis.

It introduces step-by-step “research recipes” for investigating AI imaginaries and bias, encouraging the use of ambiguous prompting, cross-model and cross-language comparison, and iterative experimentation. In addition to methodological guidance, the worksheet embeds practical and ethical considerations, including issues of data generation, bias reproduction, and transparency.
