Ecological storytelling for minor Creative Research

Description

23 students, working in 11 duos, explored how storytelling can serve as a creative research method to include the voices of more-than-human beings in space design.

The week began with a deep dive into ecological storytelling theory, followed by species observation, persona creation, ecosystem mapping, and creative media experiments. These activities resulted in slice-of-life stories that illustrated interspecies relationships within a specific location in Amsterdam. The final day featured 5-minute presentations ranging from animations and comics to illustrated diaries—starring moles, bats, nettles, bees, trees, and more. These works challenged human-centered perspectives through humor, empathy, and creativity, helping students to connect with the nonhuman world.
