Description

3 lecture for Fashion studies 1: theories underlying fashion history, fashion as a cultural phenomenon and fashion production and consumption.

During the first semester, we will look into the fashion industry by turning to
three historical garments which each reflects and important moment in the history of the fashionindustry.

Firstly, the three lectures revolve around a 1879 Tournure (or Bustle) Dress. This dress was created during what is known as the Industrial Revolution and the fashion industry knew enormous developments that are sometimes still in place today. The use of mills, sewing machines and synthetic dyes, to name but a few, had great impact upon both the production as well as consumption of clothing. Moreover, the dress enabled women to move more freely than many of the earlier dresses allowed them to do. And, in addition, due to a more widespread
availability of fashionable dress, the cultural status of garments started to become more important.

Secondly, we will look into a 1920s Flapper Dress from each of the three perspectives (history, culture, production& consumption) mentioned above. This dress stems from what we also know as the roaring twenties. Women’s rights, jazz, movies with sound, a great sense of freedom, and what not more fit the design of this dress perfectly. In addition, the large fashion houses, such as Chanel, Schiaparelli, Lanvin and Poiret, came into being. Many of these still exist today, marking a huge development in the appearance and hence studies of fashion.

Lastly, we will turn to a 1976 shirt created by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm MacLaren. This shirt reflects a time in which youth- and subcultures became enormously important. Revolt, counter-culture and cross-overs and strong ties between music, graphic design, minority rights, and as said, increasing space for the young marked a significant change in both society as well as culture, once again.

We feel that by taking you back to these groundbreaking periods in the development of fashion, whilst showing you the clothing that came with these developments, you are enabled to not merely learn from texts, but actually have a chance to embed you into the times past and develop a sense of how it must have been to be living, working, playing and wearing clothes at these times
