Description
URBAN 2030 PHASE 2 - MONITORING AND REPORTING OF THE URBAN AND TERRITORIAL DIMENSIONS OF SDGSUN-Habitat & EU Commission Expert Group Meeting on Urban Crises Monitoring
The aim of this meeting was to present and discuss how to improve the methodology and data availability for assessing urban dynamics in crisis contexts due to conflict or natural disasters. Recent decades have seen an increase in the number of natural and man-made crises, particularly in complex and densely populated urban environments. These include conflict-related damage and destruction in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen; the impact of natural disasters, such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the 2019 cyclone in Mozambique, the 2022 floods in Pakistan and the 2023 earthquake in Turkey. Protracted crises often occur in developing countries, where monitoring capacity is weak and interventions take place in a data-poor environment.
Participants
The meeting brought together a number of experts from the European Commission (Directorates-General for Regional and Urban Policies, Humanitarian Aid, Neighbourhood, International Partnerships), the EU’s Joint Research Centre, UN-Habitat’s Data unit, Syria and Iraq offices; UNDRR, academics, Humanitarian Open Street Map, IIED, IOM Data Tracking Matrix, the Joint Internal Displacement Profiling Service (JIPS) IMPACT, Salar International in Ukraine, and the World Bank
