Description
You are the hero of your own life story. But what does it mean to be a hero? Popular western narratives often revolve around the hero’s journey—an individual overcoming obstacles, achieving transformation, and striving for greatness. These stories can perpetuate myths of perfection and exceptionalism, leaving us feeling drained and pressured to "fight for what we believe in" or "become our best selves."In this workshop, we step away from the classic hero's journey and explore narratives that embrace authenticity, ambiguity, and the art of wandering. What if your personal hero doesn’t need to transform or achieve victory, but instead reflects your unique values, flaws, and joys? Through imagination and humor, we’ll create stories where self-compassion replaces perfectionism, and exploration replaces expectation.
Using the accessible and playful medium of comics (stick figures and potato people welcome!), you’ll design a character inspired by your authentic self. Together, we’ll:
1.Create a hero character that reflects your values, quirks, and desires.
2.Discuss a challenge or struggle in the world that resonates with you and explore how your hero would respond to it.
3.Craft a short comic that captures your hero navigating this challenge with honesty and imagination.
This workshop introduces you to narrative models that go beyond the hero’s journey, shows how comics can be a powerful tool for self-reflection, and helps you review your own story with kindness and humor. No real-life confessions or artistic skills required—just a willingness to explore, laugh, and create.
