Description
The presentation, Remixing Heritage to Imagine Future Sea-Level Rise Scenarios, delivered at the European Public Domain Day 2026, explored how open audiovisual archives can be activated through participatory game design to engage with climate futures.
Focusing on the EPIC-WE Cultural Game Jam (Tides of Heritage), the presentation showed how students worked with public domain materials from collections such as Open Beelden to remix archival imagery into speculative scenarios of sea-level rise in the Netherlands. Through tools like worldbuilding kits, collage-making, and scenario cards, participants translated abstract climate challenges into situated narratives and game mechanics.
The presentation highlighted how archival materials functioned as narrative anchors throughout the design process, supporting collective sensemaking and enabling the integration of social issues—such as inequality, governance, and more-than-human perspectives—into playable systems.
