Dr. Walther Ploos van Amstel is lector Citylogistics at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. 

Research interests

Dr. Walther Ploos van Amstel is a professor in CityLogistics and Urban Technology at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His focus is on sustainable city logistics, e-mobility, urban consolidation centers, and horizontal and vertical collaboration.

Current urban technology research programs at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) is focused on e-mobility, city logistics, and urban construction logistics and food in the city.

He received a doctorate in Economics in 2002 from the VU University in Amsterdam for his research on logistics organization. From 2002 to 2009 he was a professor in logistics at the Netherlands Defence Academy. From 1992 to 2002 and from 2009 to 2015 he was an associate professor at VU University in Amsterdam.

Walther was managing an NWO (accelerator) ITSLOG program. This project focuses on the use of ITS for city logistics with practical partners Ahold Delhaize, Peter Appel Transport, and Simacan. Walther also leads the Dutch part of the ERANET SAILOR project on innovation in last-mile logistics and the RAAK MKB research projects into the use of light electric vehicles in city logistics and ‘gas op elektrisch’. He participates in the JPI Urban CIVIC project on building logistics in European cities (Amsterdam, Brussels, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Vienna). In addition, on behalf of the AUAS he was project leader in the Dinalog TKI project 4C control tower applications in building logistics.

Recent projects are DKTI H2Waste (Hydrogen trucks) and DKTI AZED (Albert Heijn Zero Emission home deliveries).

Walther is a member of the steering committee of the Green Deal Zero Construction Logistics and the Green Deal Zero Emission city logistics and ambassador of the PraktijkProef Amsterdam (ITS and traffic management).

Walther is lecturing at Universities of Maastricht, Tilburg TIAS and Amsterdam and at EFMI.
