Advancing circular economy in the wood industry through digital twins

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperProfessional

Abstract

Construction industry and interior architecture are increasingly using wood, driving up demand and depleting wood resources. Yet large quantities of uncontaminated, high-quality material end up burned or downcycled into chipboard, because it is too costly to manually sort and process large volumes of random wood pieces.
In its Upcycle Wood Factory, the AUAS Robot Lab explores the added value of robotic production to effectively improve the use of this waste wood. One of the research lines involves the development of Digital Twin to model the Upcycle Wood Factory. From the Digital Twin, data can be obtained to evaluate the viability and business case for robotic wood upcycling. This session highlights the experiences in modeling and using Digital Twins in Process Simulate for this purpose.
